Program Description

Through the generosity of the Doers Cultural and Educational Foundation, a team of 16 OCU students will travel Taiwan for the last two weeks of June 2020 where they will join Taiwanese college students and work with school-aged campers in a summer cultural exchange program. The OCU team will experience many aspects of Taiwan's natural beauty and rich culture in the Anhui Province.

This unique program requires participants who enjoy meeting people from another culture, working with children and teenagers, and living in a rural, rustic setting that offers the heat and humidity of the tropics. Students accepted for this program should desire to be part of a team determined to be positive representatives of US culture and interested in actively and creatively engaging with Taiwanese youth, university students, and the adults who will work with them.

Complete an application for the Doers Taiwan Cultural Exchange Program to take the first step toward an incredible international experience. The students selected for this program will have most expenses related to the program, including airfare from Oklahoma City, paid by Oklahoma City University and the Doers Cultural and Educational Foundation. The exceptions are a $250 fee to cover program materials and excursions, plus personal expenses, and all costs associated with obtaining a passport or, if required, a visa.

Applications open February 1st and close on March 1, 2020. Only complete applications will be evaluated. Interviews for finalists will occur during mid- to late-March 2020, with finalists named by March 30. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Requirements: 2.5 GPA
Must have valid passport by March 15, 2020
Personal interview with OCU selection committee
Must be able to carry own luggage, be adaptable to new surroundings and new food, be able to live in rustic "camp-style" accommodations, tolerant of high heat and humidity, and be interested in engaging with youth and adults from another culture. Previous work with children/teenagers and knowledge of Mandarin are pluses. Adaptability is a must.

Selected applicants will participate in several group meetings and activities throughout the spring 2020 semester. The dates for this program are May 31st (depart US) through June 15th, 2020. An optional two-week, preprogram language and cultural immersion opportunity may be offered to interested students.
